Frequently Asked Questions - Overseas Expeditions
If you can’t find the answer to your questions here or just want more clarification, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me!
How Early do I Need to Book?
Popular trips and courses fill up 2 – 3 months prior to the start date. It is always best to book as early as you can to avoid missing out. I also offer an advanced booking bonus for those booking more than 2 months ahead.
Can I come on my Own?
Most people book as individuals. I create a sociable environment with your teammates and we will function as a group of friends on the mountain. There is a lot of teamwork and comradery when hiking and climbing so you often leave with new friends! I also encourage friends, couples, colleagues and family to book together as a group.
What experience do I need to join a trip?
Each trip has a recommended experience level. Some are designed for those new to climbing abroad, while others are aimed at more experienced mountaineers looking for bigger routes. The trip description will outline the required skills, but if you are unsure, please get in touch and we can advise on whether a trip is right for you.

Do I need to be super fit?
You don’t need to be an athlete, but a good base level of fitness will help you enjoy the trip. Regular walking, running, cycling, or climbing in the months leading up to your trip will make a big difference. Some trips involve long days on your feet in mountain terrain, so stamina and general robustness are more important than raw strength.

Will I need specialist climbing skills?
This depends on the trip. For example, an ice climbing week will assume some prior winter climbing experience, while a rock climbing holiday can cater for a range of abilities. Skills you don’t already have can usually be developed during the course of the trip. Each trip has a section on the webpage letting you know the prerequisites.

What equipment do I need?
A detailed kit list will be sent out after booking. This covers clothing, climbing equipment, and personal items. In most cases, technical equipment (ropes, protection, group gear) is provided by us. You’ll normally need to bring your own harness, helmet, boots, and clothing.
Can I hire equipment instead of buying it?
In some cases, yes. Ice axes, crampons, boots, helmets, harness and other items can usually be hired either locally or through us. Please ask early so we can check availability.

Are flights included in the price?
No. You’ll need to book your own flights to the destination. We’ll let you know the best options for arrival times and airports, and we organise group transfers to and from the airport at the set times advertised.

How does transport work once we arrive?
Transfers between the airport and our base are included at set times. During the trip, we provide all necessary local transport to climbing and mountaineering venues.

What about accommodation and meals?
Trips are usually all-inclusive, with accommodation, breakfast, packed lunches, and evening meals provided. Exact details are listed on each trip description. Dietary requirements can normally be catered for if notified in advance. We do not provide personal snacks and drinks or alcohol on the courses. If you like specific items such as Coca Cola, energy gels etc. there will be an opportunity to purchase these during the week.

Do I need travel or rescue insurance?
Yes. You must have personal travel insurance that covers climbing and mountaineering activities (including helicopter rescue where applicable). We’ll ask for a copy of your insurance details before the trip starts.

What if the weather is bad?
We always have alternative options. While we can’t control the weather, we choose destinations with good climbing conditions at the right time of year. If poor weather prevents the planned activity, we adapt plans to make the most of what’s possible.

Is the Course cancelled when conditions are bad?
Courses are not cancelled due to weather or conditions. Whatever the weather and conditions encountered we endeavour to offer you a rewarding experience. I encourage all participants to adopt a positive attitude and make the best of what we cannot control. Activities and venues are varied to get the best out of available conditions. Much can be learnt from operating in difficult weather, and we can focus on instruction and coaching when high level activities are not possible.

How big are the groups?
We keep ratios small to maximise safety, flexibility, and personal attention. Group size and guide-to-client ratios are listed in each trip description, but typically 1:2 for technical climbing and mountaineering and up to 1:8 for hiking.

Will language be a problem abroad?
No. We work in countries where English is widely spoken in the climbing community, and your guide will handle any local logistics.

Do I need visas or vaccinations?
This depends on the destination. For European trips, a valid passport and travel insurance are normally sufficient. For other destinations, we’ll provide guidance on visas and recommended health precautions well in advance.

Can I join on my own?
Absolutely. Many people book as individuals. We’ll match you up with suitable partners where needed, and the trips are a great way to meet like-minded people.
