Take your winter climbing to the next level

Take your winter climbing to the next level with my ‘Learn to Lead’ course. My two-day programme will equip you with the skills and knowledge to confidently and safely lead your first winter climb. From selecting appropriate routes and managing variable winter conditions to evaluating protection and successfully planning your ascent, I’ll cover it all. My course not only covers the technical and physical aspects of leading winter climbs, but also focuses on the mental preparation needed to achieve your goals.

Sample Itinerary

NB: This itinerary is a sample of what we could do during the course. This is subject to change due to weather, conditions and group fitness. I will always make sure that you get the most out of your course no matter what the weather and conditions are.

Day 1

 

09:00 - Meet at the upper car park in Coire Cas - Cairngorms National Park

(I can also collect you from your accommodation and take you to the location)

 

We will head into Coire an t’ Sneachda and climb Jacob’s Ladder, this exciting grade 1 will allow us to practise your snow anchor and rock protection skills whilst we ascend. You will take the lead on the pitches with me beside you for assistance and advice. We will also discuss the mountain environment, safety and avalanche awareness during the day alongside navigation and planning skills to give you a complete picture of your day alongside your climbing skills.

16:30 - Return to the car park and head home for a well deserved rest!
 

Day 2

 

09:00 - Meet at the upper car park in Coire na Ciste car park - Cairngorms National Park

(I can also collect you from your accommodation and take you to the location)

 

Today we will head into Fiacaill Buttress area to climb on some grade II ground. We will be focussing on your movement and anchor building as well as route choice and planning your lead. As always, we will be looking at the day as a whole and how to make good decisions in the mountain environment 

 

16:30 -  Return to the car park and head home for a well deserved rest!
