Skye Scrambles

Isle of Skye, Scotland

4 Days - 2:1 Ratio

£700 pp

The Black Cuillin is the finest scrambling terrain in the UK. Dramatic ridges, grippy gabbro rock, and views that stop you in your tracks. Skye Scrambles is four days on some of the most iconic terrain on the island. Classic ridges, memorable summits, real mountain days. The kind of scrambling you will be talking about for years.

Who This Course Is For

This course is for people who want a genuine Skye experience, real scrambling, serious mountain

terrain, days that feel properly adventurous. It is also the natural next step if you have done the Highland

Scrambling Adventure and want to take those skills into one of the most spectacular settings in Scotland.

This course suits you if:

  • You are a confident hillwalker with some scrambling experience and want to push further

  • You have completed the Highland Scrambling Adventure and are ready for bigger terrain

  • You want to experience the Cuillin on routes suited to your pace and ability

  • You are considering the full Cuillin Ridge Traverse in future and want to build towards it

  • You want a small, personal course, maximum two people throughout

ALEX AND THE CUILLIN

I grew up in the mountains. My father, Martin Moran, set the Cuillin Ridge speed record and made the first full winter solo traverse of the ridge, achievements that are part of UK mountaineering history. I have spent time on this terrain since I was young and it remains one of my favourite places to guide. When you come to Skye with me you are not just getting a qualified mountain guide. You are getting someone who knows this place deeply and cares about sharing it properly.

  • Every day is different. The Cuillin gives you something new each time — a ridge you have never been on, a summit you have been looking at from the valley, a stretch of rock that demands everything you have learned and then rewards you completely. We cover the classic routes — the kind of days that define what Skye scrambling means. The grades are real and the terrain is serious, but the pace is right for where you are, adapting each day to conditions and to you.

The kind of days we aim for:

    • Classic ridge lines with exposure and flow, Grade 1 to Grade 3

    • Iconic Cuillin summits — the ones that matter, not just the ones on a list

    • Ropework used when it makes things safer — not because the terrain demands it constantly

    • Movement on gabbro: friction, balance, reading the rock

    • A genuine sense of mountain scale that is hard to find anywhere else in the UK

  • No two courses look the same. The Cuillin offers an enormous variety of terrain and every group is different, so each day is planned around you and your experience, your pace and the conditions on the day. Alex will shape the four days to get the most out of where you are right now, building day by day toward the kind of scrambling that stays with you long after you leave Skye. Get in touch to talk through what that might look like for you.

  • This course is for confident hillwalkers with some scrambling experience. You do not need to be an expert but you should be comfortable on mountain terrain and have a good head for heights.

If you have completed the Highland Scrambling Adventure, Skye Scrambles is the natural next step. You will already have the foundations in place and be ready to take those skills into bigger, more serious terrain.

If you are unsure whether this course is right for where you are now, just get in touch and Alex will talk it through with you.

Where to stay: Glen Brittle and Portree are the best bases. Alex can advise on options when you get in touch.

  • Arriving with a good base level of fitness will make a real difference to how much you get out of the four days. You do not need to be an elite athlete but long days on Cuillin terrain are physically demanding and the more comfortable you are on the hill the more headspace you will have for the scrambling itself.

Focus on cardiovascular fitness through hillwalking, running or cycling. Strong legs and good balance are essential for moving over uneven rocky ground. Core strength supports efficient movement and reduces fatigue over long days.

If you would like advice on how to prepare, just get in touch and Alex can point you in the right direction.
